Hip replacement is a successful operation

• Hip replacement has survived for 25 years

7 July 2025, Dehradun! A hip symposium was organized by Uttaranchal Orthopaedic Association at Hyatt Centric, Rajpur Road, Dehradun. The program was inaugurated by founder president Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay, current president Dr. S. N. Singh, and organizing secretary Dr. Gaurav Gupta by lightening the lamp in presence of other dignitaries.
Founder president of Uttaranchal Orthopaedic Association, Padma Shri Prof. B. K. S. Sanjay quoted from ‘The Lancet’ that the hip replacement is the operation of century. The Lancet a top rated international weekly medical journal which sets extremely high standards for acceptance of their research papers.
Following the invention of bone cement and the development of Sir John Charnley’s low-friction arthroplasty, THR has become a widely performed and highly effective surgery in today’s clinical landscape. THR is not done as often in India because hip arthritis isn’t as common here as it is in developed countries. A common and important question asked by every patient who is advised to undergo a THR is “How long will a hip replacement last?” This is a valid and significant concern, both for the patient and the surgeon, as it directly impacts long-term outcomes and patient satisfaction.
Having an experience of survival of hip replacement for 15-25 years by this time and learning from a remarkable case which is reported in the literature in which the old hip replacement survived for 65 years, a faculty in the symposium, Guinness World Record Holder Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay concluded that the hip replacement can last in certain cases for lifelong depending on at which age the surgery is done and the patient can do all activities such as squatting and cross leg sitting which are the common need of the Indian society. He wonders if a hip arthroplasty could last 65 years, why can’t today’s THR last a lifetime? After all, since the 1950s, implant materials, designs, and surgical techniques have improved significantly. Other national and regional faculties Dr. S. S. Mohanty, Dr. Vijay Kumar, Dr. B. S. Murthy, Dr. Mudit Khanna, Dr. Gaurav Gupta, Dr. Praveen Mittal and Dr. Hemanshu Kochhar and others also shared their views about different issues related to hip replacement surgery.
